My Son’s Autism Is A Gift, Not A Disability

When my son was born, my heart exploded with joy. During my pregnancy, I suffered from Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP,) and I was told that my son had a 25% chance of being severely disabled.

Upon his birth, all the tests came back negative, and I had a healthy bundle of joy. All brain tests were confirmed that there were no signs of brain damage and he was a perfectly normal child.

Just as any mother would feel, I was crying with relief that my son didn’t have a disability and that the ICP (which was very severe) didn’t impact his health negatively.

However, as soon as we got home, things started to go downhill. He was an insomniac from day one and still struggles to get to sleep before 12:30 am!

Different people would have different opinions and everyone would generally say, “oh don’t worry, he’ll get better with sleeping as he gets older.” From home remedies to even medicines, nothing would knock my boy out. His energy is like that of a musical toy who’s battery never dies out!

We tried bedtime routines, sleepy baby bath shampoos, diffusing essential oils but nothing worked. Nothing would diffuse his energy and make him fall asleep. Cutting out daytime naps didn’t make a difference either.
